A wonderful Shell Cameo carving depicting  Athena the Goddess of Wisdom. The cameo appears to be older than the frame.  When a frame is damaged, often times it will be set into a newer frame.  This 19th Century cameo was given a new facelift with a lovely Deco gold frame.  The cameo is a brooch which can easily be turned into a necklace by pinning it on a black velvet chocker to give it the dramatic Victorian look.
 
The frame is octagonal in shape and hand engraved. The cameo is bezel-set. The back of the frame is fitted with a pin and locking "C" clasp.
